Todd Haynes and Greil Marcus

I had the opportunity to attend a lecture with Todd Haynes and Greil Marcus.  Todd Haynes is the director of such films as I’m Not There, Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine, amd Safe.  Greil Marcus, an author, journalist, and critic is teaching a class at the U of M this semester and brought in Haynes as a guest speaker.  I can not even believe it.

Along with several other topics, Haynes discussed how easy it was to get the copyright for Bob Dylan’s music for I’m Not There.  He said that Camp Dylan was super great to work with.  On the other hand, for Velvet Goldmine, there was no way that David Bowie was will to give any rights to his music, hence the Bowie-esque sounding music that was not actual Bowie.  There, that should help you next time you play trivia.
